What say ye? Are her critics overreacting, or do they have a valid point?

Miss South Africa has sparked the ire of the internet after images of her wearing gloves emerged visiting an orphanage for HIV-positive children in Johannesburg. Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters which the Daily Mail identifies as mixed-race, posted a photo of herself eating sandwiches and bread with white medical gloves on, surrounded by black children. She captioned the shot, “Winter is for yummy soup, fresh bread rolls and cozy blankies supporting @themaslowhotel‘s #wintersoupdrive” (it’s winter in the Southern hemisphere). Almost immediately Black (African) Twitter went to work.
Many were outraged, including one asking, “Do you always eat with the gloves on???” and posting photos of Peters hugging white children and dogs sans gloves.

Were these children and dogs HIV positive?
If not obviously they are overreacting

Please take a guess as to what's wrong with that picture.

well hell, she'd be stupid not to!!!...that is heartbreaking to see little kids suffer for something that they had nothing to do with.....it is gut-wrenching for me, but she is not in the wrong here, i am sure that the ones having all of the moral outrage wouldn't even be there at all...i really do hate the world system and those that run it

Apparently she is mixed race. I am assuming black/white. I wonder if she called her black parent a "typical black person?"

I visited a very poor preschool when I visited South Africa years ago. Now that place looks like it could be a lot nicer than what I saw, but ANY school and setting with lots of children are like petri dishes--even if children come from the wealthiest and healthiest environments.
While it would probably be a bit ridiculous if she was only concerned about HIV, but if she is even a bit of a Mysophobia (fear of germs), then it would make sense in that setting.
Edit: Upgrayyed brings up a good point that it's counterproductive to he eating it she was concerned about germs.

Still don't understand how HIV is a big problem over there.

Ignore the fact that those small orphaned children are afflicted with HIV and concentrate more on how someone being charitable interacts with them.
Wonderful.
Wonderful.

That article left out:
All of the adults she was with were given gloves, because they were handling the children's food.

She should not have gone if she had to wear gloves. Worked in a hospital for years. We gloved up with certain procedures but there were thousands of times not and you never knew if you were dealing an HIV+ person or not.

How dare she take simple precautions around people with a deadly disease.

Because people are petty, negative and hateful and spend their time looking to criticize or bring others down.

People get upset about the dumbest things.
