I remember a few years ago Del Toro was rumored, but I am not sure that he would even be a good choice. He may go so beyond the weird into "I don't know what the hell is going on" that it is not terrifying anymore.
Lovecraft should be horror first. Horror at glimpsing something beyond.
Carpenter did just that in Mouth of Madness.
Sam Neil did a damn good job as well. And I loved the casting of Jürgen Prochnow.
Now, earlier in the thread, someone mentioned Christine. That book terrified me as a kid. The movie...like a lot of King movies is just ehhh.....
But not sure what else Carpenter could have done with that story.

Little disappointed no one mentioned his early, early, tripped out space epic....DARK STAR>>>>

Watched Escape from New York the other night for first time in years. I forgot how good that movie was. Plus he had repeat actors most of his movies.
