Had no idea this was a Carpenter film. The only movie I've ever watched that made me feel like it was a work from Lovecraft. Thought it would be more of a Stephen King type movie. A rare classic that is never on the cable networks. Just too weird I guess....

It's history's best Lovecraft film.
But have you not seen Reanimator? That's sort of close, specifically the sequel. Also Dagon is legit.
