New Sugar deal negotiated with Mexico is a very good one for both Mexico and the U.S. Had no deal for many years which hurt U.S. badly.
WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE BOYS!
Eta he pulls this off and I'd re-elect him on this alone!

Is this going to be like the sugar deal that ruins cane farmers in the US?

Those bottles of Mexican coca-cola I get at the Piggly Wiggly are far superior.

I always get Mexican coke. Would definitely be supportive of this.

I noticed not long along that the gas station close to my house sells Mexican cokes made with real sugar. I've been hitting that place up quite often since then. Can't beat a Coke made with real sugar!

Its true everyone know Mexico has the best Coke. Make Coke Great Again!

Sugar has been a prime example of crony capitalism at the expense of the American consumer. We pay nearly triple what other countries pay. That has propped up an unsustainable sugar industry in the US and has resulted in widespread use of corn syrup that has likely destroyed the health of many.

big sugar in this country is corrupt as hell (see the studies they paid scientists to blame fat for heart disease when they knew it was sugar).
this is a VERY interesting development.

How do you come to this conclusion?
quote:
The agreement struck Tuesday keeps the 2014 agreements in place but lowers the percentage of refined sugar Mexico can send to the United States to 30 percent of its exports, from 53 percent. It also lowers the level of purity at which Mexican sugar can be sold as refined sugar.

Lower supply will only allow cane sugar prices to remain relatively higher than corn sugar (high fructose corn syrup), thus forcing Coke to continue to use the cheaper sweetener (high fructose corn syrup) in U.S. markets.

Does this flow: price of sugar cane < corn sugar decreases demand for corn for syrup as a sweetener. corn price drops. corn feed price drops. beef price drops? Is the cost of growing corn for syrup vs. feed the same? Would a price drop in corn and beef be sustainable to individually owned corn and beef farmers?
Further, how does this effect the cost of corn for ethanol?
I personally believe that corn should be in cans or cows, not cars and coke.

If there's nothing banning HFCS in beverages then companies are still going to go with it as long as it's cheaper and sales don't suffer.
Unless this deal is just the beginning of changes in the sugar industry (govt mandated % of cane vs beet sugar, the loan system that basically creates a price floor, etc) then this won't change anything.
