Aren't you a nurse? I'd think that you'd know better than most how a despondent person arrives at that decision. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend and the wreckage they left behind. I know it's difficult to deal with and accept. As far as understanding suicide goes, I can only offer this:

For a suicidal person, I think sometimes it's not a question of "Why?", but "Why not?".
