Between 1856 to 2016, Republicans did not nominate high energy candidates with the exception of Theodore Roosevelt. They nominated statesmen. Dole was a statesman as was Theodore Roosevelt.

There was a Clintonesque air about the entire Republican primary season in that many seemed to think it was just Dole's turn.
