Try bikesdirect.com
I have 2 bikes from them, same components as the name brands. All frames under $3000 outsourced by the name brands and probably come from the same factory.
This. I ride with a couple of guys that have BD bikes and they have no complaints. My next bike might be their Hal 6.

I would look at buying a frame and building it up yourself with low end parts then up grade one by one as your budget allows,if you have the skills and tools. but any co-op will be a huge help when building up your first bike.
soma wolverine is a good looking and really good value frame
(would probably be looking at a bit over $1000 though, but it will be a lot nicer than most mail order bikes)
