couple of renovation questions

1. When getting bids from subcontractors, is it commonplace to negotiate a lower price once a bid is given or is their bid their bid and you take the one you want? If you did get them agree to lower price would you worry about someone half-assing it because you aren't paying as much? Or is it more of a deal where some back and forth is expected and the first offer isn't the last one?
2. Before putting up sheetrock, we have insulation to put in to walls some but mostly ceiling. Is this usually done by one of other subs - sheetrock, general labor, etc or just specific insulation companies? Any advice or recs that you could give would be appreciated in Baton Rouge area.

I always negotiate everything. All the time.

If you're worried about a contractor doing this, hire a different contractor.

A bid is a bid, no changing that once you sign a contract. Make sure they are insured along with workmen comp.
Installing of insulation. If you have that in your contract, then it should be done. Or, you can contract that out yourself. Get bids on that.

Good contractors are busy. If he quotes x amount per sq ft to do the drywall and you start low balling him. He may decide he doesn't want to work for you and move on to the next job.

Negotiating a bit is fine. If they appear to be half-assing it then tell them they arent getting paid until it's done right.

You could do the insulation yourself. I did mine when renovating. Buy it by the roll and get a staple gun for in the wall. Just staple to each stud on the sides.

You can absolutely negotiate. I simply share with them that I've received lower bids already. The ones that will negotiate will then try. Some will try and sell you about why they're worth more. Just tell them you'd like to use them, but can't justify paying more.
I would never worry about them half assing because you'd be the boss. You determine if they get paid. They do a garbage job, they don't get paid until it's fixed. Never pay anything upfront. Ever.
