1) sign holiday (to whatever contract he and MIN agree to?)
2) rubio is at $14.25MM, so how much more salary would the pels have to take back assuming holiday is north of 20?
3) the biggie...would the pels really have to send a pick asset if MIN is getting the "better" player?

The Pels sign Holiday using his Bird Rights, the Timberwolves have something like 22 mil in cap space even before trading away Rubio, so their cap space minus Rubio's contract would allow them to fit Jrue into their team without going over the cap. The Pels can take back Rubio plus the difference between Rubio's salary and Jrue's salary as a TPE.

For example:

Pelicans sign Jrue to a 4/110 contract (flat 27.5 per)

Minnesota fits Jrue into their cap because they have 22 in space and they are sending out Rubio (Jrue is only 27.5 mil, so he fits in easily)

Pels get back Rubio and his 14 mil in salary, and get an 13.5 mil TPE (the difference between Rubio and Jrue's salary), allowing them to stay above the cap

It's likely that Minnesota couldn't fit Jrue into their space without having to make other trades and they are attempting to trade Rubio anyway, so they could do this without the Pelicans having to give up an asset.

I'd rather have Rubio at 14 than Jrue at 28, that's for sure.

Exactly and we do them an extra solid by taking back Bjelica (who is expiring at $3.25m and won't block Diallo long term) - this opens up them to sign Justin Holiday assuming the package deal thing is legit (which I assume it is)

If the trade were to go down and we got, say CJ Miles with the MLE it would look like

Maybe you do keep Cunningham to play the 3 or you use the BAE on someone like Casspi or Swaggy P - maybe even get a DeAndre Liggins or James Young

Rubio / Cook / Jackson
Miles / Moore / Crawford
Hill / Cunningham / Pondexter
Davis / Bjelica / Diallo
Cousins / Ajinca

I like the makeup of that team...will it win a championship? Of course not, but it would be a playoff team and, more importantly, enough to keep Boogie and AD here longer

The concern would be whether Minny thinks they can trade Rubio elsewhere for better value and therefore open up enough cap space to fit Jrue in free agency. However, if Jrue wants to leave, I would love this deal to get Rubio AND create a nice TPE while maintain status as over the cap.
