quote:Fall 77’ is such a great stretch, and it gets overshadowed because the boys absolutely crushed it that May (although I think some of later shows that month like Tuscaloosa, Pembroke Pines, & Atlanta are better than the Cornell show). Check out 10/16/77 for a ROCKING show at the PMAC, in my opinion they played their best Sugaree that night
11/6/77 is an all time

show report, leftover salmon + phil and the family band at red rocks sat 05/05
we flew in to denver on thursday, hit up some dispenseries and grabbed a meal at cherry creek in LoDo (highly recommend). from there we drove out to evergreen where we had a cabin rented on bear creek.
show was sold-out, great crowd of mostly older folks without too many knotheads. leftover salmon played two hours to start...i'd never listened to them before. the bluegrass stuff was pretty awesome, i didnt care for their spacier music (it was pretty boring actually) but that was a good chance to go upstairs and refresh. phil came out with them and played catfish john & big boss man, then they closed with a couple ripping bluegrass tunes.
phil & family band then started and played two tunes with LV, starting with a great cumberland and a viola lee blues. other highlights were UJB and a really great new speedway boogie. the guitarist from twiddle (?) came out last and they closed with fire and a scorching music never stopped.
really great show, lots of fun and obviously red rocks is the GOAT.
heres the setlists:

Fall 89 through summer 90 is my favorite period
I got to see them at the shoreline in 89.
I'm into the strat tone from 72 these days. Great song list then too. Pig Pen still in.

Blazing through Deal right now. Ready for some Lazy Lightning. Happy Cornell Day folks!
Finally got around to finishing Phil and Billy’s books. Both are great reads. Bill didn’t pull any punches. I liked the way his book read. Wasn’t just straight dates and facts. Lots of tangents and random commentary. Very enjoyable.

Nice to see this thread back on track talking about the grateful dead, not that shitty band with the poser mayer in it.
5/8/77 isnt the greatest show ever imo, but its tough to beat that 2nd set. That scarlet->fire is smoking hot.

Listening to 11/8/69 Fillmore Auditorium tonight...aka Dick's Picks vol.16
Posted on 5/8/18 at 8:24 pm to rutiger
Most popular and well circulated show is what I’d call 5/8/77
Who’s to say what’s best show? I’d go with something in ‘69 but that’s just my taste.

I've always thought the 5/9/77 show in Buffalo was better than the Cornell one. Hands down the best Comes a Time ever and possibly the best The Music Never Stopped, Ship of Fools, and Help on the Way/Slipknot/Franklin's Tower as well. My pick for best show I've ever heard from them.
