It was David Thompson until cocaine derailed his career

In terms of popularity combined with level of play, Dr. J was probably the most like Jordan before Jordan. But you're right, David Thompson had largely the same game as Jordan before the drug use derailed his career. Just a notch above everyone else athletically

The thing with Jordan was we never saw moves in the air like he showed by anyone before him. Closest was Dr. J

I know this is off the topic, but the player that MJ aspired to emulate was David "Skywalker" Thompson, who probably would be in the conversation if he would have been able to avoid the pitfalls of fame and fortune.

Dr J. He was the guy who changed basketball to an above the rim game (I mean, he didn't do it alone, but he's the guy who got the credit... Dr. J was Basketball God when I was a kid).

It blows me away that some younger fans don't even know who Dr J is. I was talking about him recently and it was weird, he was huge.

Want to watch The Fish that saved Pittsburgh but bet it's terrible now.

People forget just how ridiculously athletic he was. Both guys were from North Carolina and I don't think it's a stretch at all to say Jordan played like he did because he was trying to mirror Thompson.

Dr. J was just so long and soared through the air. Thompson was like 3 inches shorter, but just an incredibly explosive leaper.
