My wife and I are here right now and will be leaving tomorrow. If you want off the beaten path I suggest getting a day pass/several day pass for the subway and a good map. Lots of places you can get to and see from the metro stations.

It was our first time so we did all the touristy stuff. I highly suggest the Holocaust museum if you've never been.

Stay away from the smithsonian museums. They are shells of their former selves. Lines are terrible too.

Go to national archives. Line isn't too bad.

Go to national art gallery. It's really cool and not crowded. They have davinci, Van Gogh, other famous works

Holocaust museum

Arlington national cemetery. Tomb of the unknown

Washington monument is closed. Lincoln is way too crowded. Go see Jefferson memorial across the river.
