Just bought a 15 lb brisket from Rouses. Cut open one corner of the wrapper and was hit with the rotten egg smell. Is that bad?

I know its a pain but I would go back and swap it out. They will tell you to not even bring it in and they will give you another one.

That's just aged beef. IWEI

Seriously, I have kept briskets that were in cryovac packaging for up to eight weeks in the refrigerator and they were fine.

Bring it back. I had the same problem with the Rouse's in Ponchatoula. Took the meat out of the plastic the day after I bought it and almost got knocked over by the shite/egg smell.
Will not buy meat from Rouses again.

I've done quite a few (a lot) of briskets and bunches of pork ribs that have come in cryovac packages. Mostly from HEB but some from Kroger, Food Town and ribs once or twice from Wal-Mart.

I have never opened a package that smelled bad. I would return it and have no further relationship with said store if that did happen.

It's never happened to me but I don't imagine eating bad food is very much fun.

I take my chances with a lot of food past expiration dates, or cooked food that's been in my fridge a week or so, and cooked food I leave out of the fridge awhile. I do not do anything with bad smelling meat but throw it away (or take it back).

ETA: Actually, it doesn't even have to be meat for me to throw it out. If it smells bad, it's gone.

Cook it and give it to someone you don't like.
