Canada basically did what Trump is proposing and it has worked well for them. Many other countries have done it. Why would we be unable to do it safely like the others?

Vast airspace, much larger traffic numbers, National Defense considerations.
Canada has a system that is to be appreciated, and to be honest if we could pull it off, I'd be ok with it.
I'm not saying it would be inherently unsafe, just less safe. I'm thinking from the point of view of a people based position. Privatization seems to bring more of a bottom line to what we do, vice safety. I worry about airlines looking to cut corners, etc.
Your argument holds merit though, obviously I can't give you data, only my personal opinion.
There are subtle complexities to our airspace that are different than any other country, I'm not going to say it won't work, but there's a reason implementing NexGen has taken this long.
A good portion of it is related to funding, which this bill addresses.

I hear "Canada" all the time. They run the same volume of traffic in their entire system that SOCAL does per day. SOCAL is just one part of the massive US National Airspace System. Looking to other countries isn't the way to approach this.
