Having shot both 226 and 229 legions with DA/SA there's little difference. 226 grip is longer and narrower while the current 229 was built for a 40 caliber and is beefier all around. Depending on which grip you'd rather is a personal choice.

I like the 229 more due to it being what I consider a full size gun (fills the grip/all fingers with my glove size large hands) while maintaining shorter barrel/slide/grip. You can get 229 magazines with 15 or 17 (15s with a plus 2 basepad) - 10 rounders are for magazine restrictive states. 226 comes with 15s I believe but can easily get 18s with the same mag size. Good thing to note is the 226 mags fit (extend further out grip) in the 229s.

I've shot both and own 2 p226 so I may be somewhat biased. Plus the p229 i shot was a .40 which I'm not the biggest fan.

I prefer the p226. I think the balance on them are just about perfect as is the pointabililty. The 229 has the same pointability but I just love the 226.
