Anyone know any adults who can't read? I'm not talking about old people, I mean young/middle age adults.

I recently found out 2 people I know (not that well though) can't read. These guys are in the mid 20's

From what I was told, it isn't a case of lack of comprehension, but actually not being able to read words. I witnessed a situation with one of them that pretty much confirmed it. He went to extreme measures to avoid reading when requested to perform a few tasks, almost awkwardly avoiding it.

How the frick does this happen? How can a person allow themselves to let this happen? How does anyone like this expect to get a job that will support even themselves?

Just for the record, one does live in a trailer, the other at home with parents.

I can't imagine not being able to read.

It's like never learning how to walk.

Should be admired. Socrates warned us all of the dangers of reading.

What measures? Did he start drooling on himself? Pounding his chest? Throw poop at everyone?

I'm sincerely interested..

My daughter can't walk- so don't lump them in the same category, please.

Subtle brag.

I have a distant relative who is in his 50s and is functionally illiterate. For context, he's from Grand Bay, Alabama. I think he can read enough to get by, but he's never made an effort to do any better than that. He makes decent money as a mechanic, and I guess he just doesn't NEED to know how to read proficiently for his job or to go about his day to day business.

1/4 of Baton Rouge is functionally illiterate, which is somehow still higher than I imagined.

Yes. I used to work in a warehouse. So everyday it was shipping and receiving constantly. A white guy in his 40's worked there and couldn't read. He'd bring tickets to me to tell him what to load.

I was warehouse manager and doing inventory within 2 months of starting.

There's a movie where Sam Neil plays a guy who is illiterate. But he was just pretending, Sam Neil can read in real life, I'm pretty sure.

Better question, how in the world are you acquaintances with people that can't read?
