Good point. It's what "mommy and daddy" does when when they get in the car. This is just my thinking, only based on reading the story.. but from point A (the kids room) to point B (inside the vehicle) there are several questionable events that supposedly happened and if that is the case (it didn't happen that way), then is it possible the mother could have created a story before the kids were dead?
With that said, I don't know what state of mind the mother was in or, like you said, was this a 2 year old closer to the age of 3.. or what?
