If I heard this right, McMaster said that it was wholly appropriate for Trump to tell the Russians this info but leaking to the press that this happened is a national security threat.
Anyone care to parse?
That's what I don't get.
McMaster is saying that Trump didn't say anything inappropriate BUT the leaker is compromising national security. So if trump was saying appropriate things that we already know about, why is the leaker compromising security?

Clearly I think Trump is a buffoon, but he's the President. He's supposed to make these decisions, not staffers leaking information to hostile media entities.
Of course, the issue is that a ton of people don't trust him to make those decisions, and he's given us plenty of reasons to doubt his competence in this area and his trustworthiness.

My guess is that the President can tell someone something in the confines of the Oval as he wishes.
However, a leaker may repeat something that, while perfectly ok to be shared in a closed environment, shouldn't go out to the unwashed masses. Also, even if the actual Intel isn't leaked, just leaking a topic of discussion that then gets into the media for the whole world to see, can put the subject of the Intel on guard and/or make them change plans or do a deeper dive into people in the inside to find the source of the Intel.
For example, say Trump tells the Russians which city the Intel came from. Russia will do with The info as they will, but not broadcast it. The leaker only gives the country. Bad guys in that country figure out where the information was discussed the most and start to zero in on where the information source is.
