Zone defense was added in 2001-2002, which aids defenders struggling 1 on 1
Further, those new bullshite stats nerds who never played sports invented don't take into account the defensive scheme. How can you rate the defender with a #, when the computer doesn't know what the coaches defensive scheme was that possession?
Simple, man to man 1 on 1. That's what I look at. And if you can't see by watching tape that Kobe was an absolute demon (yes, better than Lebron who is a terrific defender in his own right), then it's a waste of my time discussing this further with you. Kobe was doing chase down blocks while Lebron was barely in middle school.

And defense is obviously more than just on the ball, man to man so you're cherry picking a small percentage of a defensive possession.

If that's all you're going to take into account of course you'd think Kobe's the superior defender. LeBron's greatest value is that he's great both as a perimeter help defender and as a rim protector on top of one on one defense. Kobe was also great one on one and as a help defender but never had the impact of a big man defensively.
LeBron was amazing in last season's playoffs serving as the linchpin of the defense that shut down GS's "death lineup."

At some point, you have to be able to point to numbers to defend your case. These numbers have to be derived from statistical models that have been backtested to prove their internal consistency.
If Kobe is the better defender, there has to be some objective measure that proves it.
Additionally, the game isn't 1 on 1, it's 5 on 5.
