It's the second time in six months Lee was shot in the same part of Baton Rouge. In November, he was hit in the leg during a drive-by shooting while standing outside a house on 73rd Avenue. In both shootings, family and friends said he was an innocent bystander.

What a sad story and shite like this infuriates me since even the good kids have no shot. We NEED more prisons and we NEED to keep violent offenders locked up until they rot. I would bet big money the fricking pieces of shite who did this have lengthy records and have been convicted of violent crimes in the past.

How does my first post, the one I am replying to, have 6 downvotes and no upvotes? You guys don't get pissed off that this happens and think we should lock violent criminals away? Am I missing something here?

It is a sad situation and a terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to his parents since a parent should never have to bury a child.

What we need is a change in the juridical system. Why build more jails when you have judges like Judy White who will let them out? The tax payers will be paying for these jails and to keep more people locked up so that isn't the answer.

I agree about keeping violent offenders in, but we don't need more prisons. We need to stop throwing minor drug offenders into prison and send them to rehabs. That alone would free up plenty of space in our prisons, but that's what you get when you have for-profit private prisons that have unions and lobbyists to keep them afloat by incarcerating people who haven't hurt anyone else.

If we let the non-violent offenders out, there'd be plenty of space for the violent folks.

We have the highest incarceration rate in the country, and the US has one of the highest rates in the industrialized world. How's that working for us?

I'm sure the perpetrators do have convictions for violent crimes as you said, but simply tossing them in a cell for 15 years does nothing except make them more likely to go back. Zero rehabilitation. Zero prospects for most people with felony convictions on their records. Our recidivism rates are through the roof because of how our prisons are run. Simply having more prisons will just exacerbate the problem since so many of them are privatized and they make money by making sure every bed is full.
