Superman is the guy who STOPS bad guys from destroying cities. He's not supposed to punch them indiscriminately so they? go flying through buildings and tearing up more shite. He's supposed to take the fight AWAY from crowds, not throw down in the middle of Grand Central station.
"General Zod, old boy, it would be bad form for me to engage in fisticuffs with you in a crowded environment. Do please be a good fellow and follow me out to an unpopulated area where we can settle this matter like gentlemen."
