Ammo question about short barrel 9mm

The last 9 I owned was a tank-like Ruger P series about 10-12 years ago. Obviously it would shoot anything I put in it with no issues. I had a 40 since then, and just recently got a XD-Slim 9mm with the 3.3 inch barrel for carry. I know every gun is a little different, but what is the general consensus on ammo choices out of a short barrel 9mm? I typically like heavy bullet weights for the caliber, but not sure on a 9. I also like to plink with similar weight bullets to what I carry. I picked up some Federal JHP's at the store, but I'll obviously be trying several different brands and loads until I settle on one. Just thought I would ask a few questions before getting started.

personally for my full size S&W M&P 9mm, I found the Winchester white box jhp 115 grain to be the best for overall reliability and accuracy without being that dirty and that is what matters to me.
I haven't had any misfires at all, my accuracy is spot on, unlike with the 124 grain, and the hp spread on these bullets is very consistant every time.
if I hit someone with it they are going down or not going very far, they certainly aren't going to keep coming towards me.
