Offseason needs and how they were addressed in FA/Draft, Roster concerns

I think we can agree that Offseason Needs (in no order) were:
DE
CB
LB
G
RT
RB
KR/PR
S
WR
DT
QB (heir apparent)
How those needs were addressed:
DE: Alex Okafor, resigned Tapp, Trey Hendrickson, Al-Quadin Muhammad, return of Kikaha
CB: Marshon Lattimore, resigned Sterling Moore (healthy returns of PJ Williams, Breaux)
LB: AJ Klein, Manti Teo, Alex Anzalone
G: Larry Warford
RT: Ryan Ramcyzk
RB: Adrian Peterson, Alvin Kamara
KR/PR: Alvin Kamara, Tedd Ginn
S: Marcus Williams, Rafael Bush (Byrd cut)
WR: Tedd Ginn (Brandin Cooks out)
DT: re-signed Nick Fairley
QB: Chase Daniel (heir apparent not addressed)
So we pretty much addressed to one degree or another, every single need in FA or Draft, except for Drew's future replacement.
To be perfectly frank, I think we did extremely well this offseason in filling a tremendous amount of needs. I think the argument that will rage is filling that edge rusher spot, but I'm actually feeling ok about it in the short term.
Future concerns:
QB: (obviously) Must find the heir apparent to Drew
WR: Thomas is great but Snead could be a FA next year, and Ginn is old
DE: Will always be a thought until you get an obvious stud opposite Cam
LB: lots of bodies but no one that blows you away (we will see how Klein does as the fulltime starter)
DE
CB
LB
G
RT
RB
KR/PR
S
WR
DT
QB (heir apparent)

Snead will be resigned. I have no worries about that.

He either signs the tender or sits out, and he ain't doing the latter.
That goes for next year too as he's a RFA next year.

QB: Chase Daniel (heir apparent not addressed)
he's probably a better stop gap option than what a dozen other teams have.

Seriously.
If we win, Payton rides Brees and eventually plug someone into the system.
If we don't win, Payton and Brees both leave, you blow up the team to start over, and the QB issue will be addressed by the new coach.
I don't see Payton leaving and the next guy continuing his system.

Man hopefully Okafor surprises.

Payton disagrees and was about to draft Mahomes if not for Lattimore and KC.
And at the league meetings Payton said Brees told him he'll play for another 2-3 years (and I thought he said after this one so maybe 3-4).
You don't want to just plug in any QB, especially if not from a pro style offense. They should sit for 2 years and learn.
That means next year or in 2019 we'll need to draft one very early.
And Payton absolutely plans on staying after Brees leaves, and almost getting Mahomes proves that.

I think the Saints need to become a consistent playoff team again, or Payton is in serious jeopardy. His system has been .500 records with a HOF QB putting up incredible stats at the helm, I don't know that you can project dominance with a young QB. Might be time to change up, when Brees leaves.

Pretty damn good offseason imo. The only 2 things that you can complain about are maybe not investing enough at the DE position(not signing at a big money F.A./Drafting a guy in the 1st or 2nd round), & losing Cooks/gaining Ginn.
I'm less concerned with the WR position(the addition of Kamara helps). We should be able to easily get by at this position. DE is more of a question mark. Hopefully it works out.

The problem is all the good rush ends were off the market when FA started, Lattimore fell into our lap, and teams admitted to reaching for rushers at the end of round 1 (Jones straight up said it).
By the time 42 came around you only had third round grade guys left.
76 we could have gotten a third round grade guy, but now name me all the great pass rushers from after round two.

This. JPP, Chandler Jones, pretty much any good rush DE weren't even able to hit the market before they were locked up.
We pretty much got the next best option in Okafor. If one of those guys HAD hit the market then I'm sure the Saints would have tried to snag him. Especially if they were willing to pay Butler all that cash.
But with all the people complaining about making additions to the secondary without adding a pass rusher, would you rather they just not fix the secondary at all?

Yep. I think the FO made the right decisions to help the team as a whole. It's very hard to fill all your needs with F.A. & the draft(top 2 rounds should be assumed as starters...unless it's a QB). Ramczyk might not be a starter right away, but we use 3 OT's a lot & he's a likely starter in 2018. No problem with that pick.
Considering that F.A. wasn't really an option at the DE position & we only had 3 picks in the top 2 rounds...the FO did a good with the hand they were dealt. They took BPA in the 1st round at positions of need & took the top Safety on their board in the 2nd(besides Hooker, Marcus Williams was the best center fielder in the draft imo). They got damn good value in that 1st round. Maybe the best value of any NFL team besides SF. Top 5 player at #11, & top 20 player at #32. SF got the #2 player at #3, & a top 10 player at #31.
