We had a big tree fall last year and it knocked off a little vent on the side thr roofers forgot to replace. As a result I have a bunch of rats that have rested in my attic. I have caught 5 this week in outside traps. And I am closing up the house. But what is best way to get rid of the ones living in my House.

Cats. Our combines and rice trucks used to have their wiring destroyed every winter. Have a couple cats at the shop now and no rat problems

Those little bastards are smart. Bait a bunch of old fashioned snap traps for a few days but leave them unset. Then on the 3rd or 4th day set them. I tried 4 different kinds of traps and poison in the outside shed. The old fashioned wood and metal bar snap traps were the only thing that actually worked. Sealing up the house is the most important step. Good luck.

I strongly recommend hiring a professional after meeting with a couple people to find someone who appears honest and to know what they are doing. It will be a difficult process to remove them if they are established. It will involve daily work in the beginning. And preventing any future entry is more difficult that you might think. You have received some good advice in this thread and some poor advice. Poison is very problematic inside a home for several reasons.

Gather up all neighbor hood stray cats throw them in the attic.. Then buy snakes to get the cats out.. then burn the house down to get rid of the snakes.. Then rebuild.

Problem solved
