I hate to ruin your narrative, and I'm not even here to argue about whether or not they have become liberal, because I think they have.
However, this has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with people not buying cable subscriptions anymore. John Skipper should fire himself because he signed off on massive TV deals with various leagues and college conferences. They thought that live sports would keep people from cutting the cord and it turns out they were wrong.

Eh..I'd say it's a combination of both. Or to put it another way the former is leading to an increase in the latter.
Live sports was the one thing keeping many people on cable. If those same people no longer care much about watching live sports because of a perceived political bias, they have less regrets about cutting the cord.
Not to mention the big three streaming services (PS Vue, DirectTV NOW, and Sling TV) all have ESPN as an option. So people termed "cord cutters" may still actually be watching ESPN.

The politics don't help - take Bill Simmons for example. He had a ton of fans at his peak most of them were white guys around 30-40 years of age. This group voted for Trump somewhere between 60 and 65% and yet he needled the frick out of them over the past two years bashing Trump on every podcast so that he could get chummier with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and Jon Favreau and his new LA friends.
As a (partial) result, he had unbelievably low ratings and lost his HBO show like 4 episodes into his run and his political friends betrayed him, taking the politics efforts he launched and funded at Ringer to do their own thing.
You should never become overly partisan unless it's your schtick like Colbert

ESPN is what holds most people back from cutting the cord. Their liberal BS made it easy for me to say goodbye.
I used to watch a ton of ESPN. Got tired of people telling me how I should feel about a myriad of political issues so I stopped watching.
Yes, their liberal BS caused them damage and will continue to cause them damage.
Is that why everyone cut ESPN? Nope. Is it enough to hurt their earnings? Yes.
