If you are going to check out rioja, I recommend staying in Logrono, it is central to a lot of wine bodegas and has a cool feel.
Definitely check out La Gurdia, it is a beautiful fortified midevil towns set on a hill with awesome views of the wine country.
Plus, rioja wine is delicious and relatively inexpensive.
