Knife scam?

Anybody heard about the trend of people particularly high school and college kids selling Cutco Knives? Apparently it's a thing at my kids school. Lots of little entrepreneurs apparently, but it seems a bit odd that someone can make $10 to $15 an hour at that level as they claim. What about taxes, and travel expenses and the documentation that goes along with being a salesperson? Maybe I'm too skeptical.

We had a friends kid come by and bought some knives from him. He went to Catholic High. Great knives. It's legit.

You Can, make $10-15 an hour with door to door sales.
You could also make <$1/hour.
Not many people want to buy knives this way anymore.
It was easier to do these types of sales before internet.
As far as having high school age kids do it. I think it's great. Will teach them how to do a balance sheet, a sales forecast, how to manage inventory and how to deal with customers. Better than bringing home a box of chocolate "that the school can't take back", forcing the parents to buy the entire box. By the way, anyone want some frozen six month old candy bars?

What is this 1991??? I did that for my first job back in the mid 90s lol I figured technology made that obsolete

I thought selling your body to teachers was the new scam for high school students.

It's not a scam (been around forever), but it's the equivalent of other in home sales shite. You can go to any store and buy knives. I don't want some stranger in my house selling me something I can get anywhere.

A buddy of mine graduated from college and now does this full time. Looks like he's enjoying himself, on fb anyways.

I wouldn't mind it. I never remember how badly my knives suck until I go to use them. The door to door knife guy would probably close me.

I've had a pair of cutco kitchen shears for over 15 years and they are still awesome.
The knife set gave me sticker shock and I didn't buy them.

I answered an ad in the paper for one of these jobs as a teenager.

you answer the ad and go to this building across the street from the strip club and this dude with spiky hair and a suit is all like "yeah you see my bmw outside, you're gonna get one too" and it's mostly you and ghetto kids but by the second day of "training" its just you and like 2 other regular kids and then you pay 300 bucks to buy some knives (they're pretty good knives though) and then you proceed to hitting up your high school directory and your friends' parents will see the demonstration because they're nice but you quickly find out that a long procession of dudes that graduated before you already sold everything there was to sell to these people but they'll buy the cutting boards or something
basically try a newer fad product, cutco's been going on like 40 years and everybody who's ever gonna buy already bought

I bought some from a kid (friend) who was selling. I like the knives but my SO doesn't.

I don't want anyone coming to my door to sell me anything.

You're not skeptical, you're logical. This is just another one of those "be your own boss" marketing schemes that catch people's attention because they make it sound so easy to make money.
I know quite a few young women who've done Pampered Chef, Stella and Dot, It Works, Mary Kate, Juice Plus, Advocare, Rodan and Fields, and so on. They make a few bucks at it, but by the time you factor in the amount of time spent at it and expenses for travel and hosting "parties" to try to sell to family/friends....its not worth it and they end up quitting. Always the same people over and over...quit one of those programs because the little bit of income wasn't worth all the time and effort or they ran out of friends/family to sell to.

In today's internet age, how are these multi-level marketing schemes still in business?
Posted on 3/28/17 at 10:46 am to tonydtigr
I did it back in 2011. Made some good summer cash until I ran out of relatives to sell to. Also, I think we may know each other, Death Valley. My friend also just graduated and just got his BMW. Opening an office on the Westbank. The guy that took over the BR office took it to one of the top offices in the country and is making bank. Good for them folks... it just wasn't for me. I still have my set and it some pretty good stuff.
