have a pretty strong Polish connection I need to learn more about.

Get the international version of ancestry. Slightly more expensive but worth it. I dont know about poland, but the records in france and england (the ones I have been concerned with so far) are amazing.

I've been using it along with Myheritage.com, Familysearch.com and Wikitree.

I'm using all free versions so far and have not subscribed to anything, I've gone back at least 8 generations on each major branch of the family.

What has been cool, is I've come into contact with some people descended from y 3rd great grandfather's second marriage. They were looking for more info on him and I had his entire ancestry going back to the 1700's in Bas-Rhin France. They had pictures of him, and some of his daughters. We were able to help fill in some gaps for each other.

Keep an eye on this poster because I suspect he is laying down the ground work to be eligible for Reparations cash.

I sent in my DNA about a month ago and I'm pretty pumped to get the results back.

Yes it is actually pretty illuminating. I found out many of the family stories were true ( our friendship with Cherokee nation and marriage of my ancestors to Cherokee princess) some were false (we only owned a few house slaves and were not major slave owners) and most surprisingly that my surname is French not irish, and my great great great great grandfather was on the mayflower, and my great great great uncle started the French Revolution.

If your family were in this country in 1700s u will find u really are related to everyone. Related to bushes and Clintons. It's is fun to play with

I have been using Ancestry for 10 years or so now. It can be expensive, but certainly worth it for the multitude of records available. I love the hints that pop up based on names and birth/marriage/death details.

I will say that you need to be careful using info from the other member's trees - some folks just put it in because it seems to fit, and don't really research it. If you do the DNA test through them, it will connect you to other member's who share parts of your DNA, and it is pretty accurate.

If you have a lot of military folks in your ancestry, the Fold3 membership can be real helpful. I have used it to read pension files or compiled military service records of ancestors from both Union and Confederate sides.

Ancesrtry worked better for me , 23 and me has something unique that can test dna with medical tenancies and give you results . I was more interested in my family tree . Google , my heritage and the library can also be helpful . The way autosomal dna is created or passed down is not mathematical as you can have dominated genes . A sibling that isn't an a twin may have a different amount of one ancestor than than their sibling .

I'd like to hear the whole citizenship part. I know some of those countries have some lax citizenship requirements

So in Italy, if you have a bloodline that has never renounced their Italian citizenship, then you are technically a citizen by Italian law. All you have to do is show them you are. I'm happy to go in detail if you want to email me.

By default it gets passed on to my kids, their future kids and so on.

I actually knew nothing about it until I read about it in a WSJ article about Brexit. That's what prompted me to go onto Ancestry

Typical bama fan.

Probably because there arent any records of births in the woods. Especially when no one in the family can write

Sad thing is gumps only have to do half the work to compile a full record of their ancestry.

added me, my parents, and my grandparents I knew. It kept asked if some people were related but I had never heard of them, asked my parents and they didn't either.
I gave up after a couple of weeks

You have to look up their census records, marriage records, birth records...

All of those would give the names of your grandparents' parents.

The really interesting stuff though comes from the newspaper articles though.

For example my great great grandfather was killed in the line of duty as a police officer in Jackson, Miss. I was able to find the newspaper articles that described what happened, the following attempted lynching, trial, and execution of the perp.

They had photos .

This. Basically if the original immigrant had kids before he naturalized then it gets passed on.

Right. I was one of the lucky ones my GGF had my GF before he became a US citizen. That was the key.

We got my dad an account a few years ago for Fathers Day and he took off with it. We are related to George Washington and the Queen of England.

The most interesting one was my mother's great great grandfather was the one who brought the Ware's to Arkansas. Well he was a Dr. But he was run out of town in Illinois because some of his snake oil killed someone.

Ancestry has better information about ancestry and genetic origin

23andMe has better health related information regarding your DNA
