I just find it convenient that all of the ownership restrictions come out after Gentry starts getting heat. Same thing for all of Dell's moves. Even though every move is completely in line with Dell's philosophy and history, the meddling ownership excuse never fails to surface when things go south.

Demps wanted a coach who played the system (Warriors) that he wanted, who AD would like, and who would not challenge him in anyway like Monty started to do. I also find it difficult to believe that ownership would be willing to fire Monty and pay his salary after getting to the playoffs and then go super cheap on the new coaching search. I think a coach willing to take a cheaper salary was a plus and they were not willing to pay $8M+ per year for a coach unproven with the organization, but I don't think they gave Dell a salary restriction which eliminated most candidates. They also paid above average money for assistant coaches for Gentry.

I do think ownership plays a role in making Demps job more difficult, but Demps is in the driver's seat. It is his job to make the decisions and it is his job to convince/persuade ownership of the right path to success. The idea that Demps just made a few more bad moves than good ones and really it is mostly ownership's fault where no GM could possibly succeed is an extremely biased view that comes from people in Dell's office feeling the heat.

But it's not like they'd lie about things like that. Mislead or omit a little maybe, but it has to be mostly based on the truth. You don't throw your boss under the bus.

IIRC Monty wasn't making much. I don't know if the figures were ever released but the speculation I always saw was in the $1-$2 million range. So I don't think eating a year of his deal would have been that bad.

JVG getting an interview at all and then being considered still in the mix after the interview does suggest that the budget was more than what Gentry ended up getting.

I think we need to be skeptical or at least overly analytical of the information they do give out. The Pels organization doesn't really leak, so if they are giving the summer roadmap to McNamara there has to be a reason. I think they want to keep hardcore fans like us from filling the information void with the worst case scenario and then talking about that on social media. Since the Cousins trade MM has practically become an optimist, compare that to someone like David Fisher and TBW who puts out pessimistic stuff about the FO several times a day.

I'm not saying MM is on the take or has been hoodwinked or anything, they've just given him reason to focus on the future while someone like Fisher is writing about what he is able to analyze best, how poorly managed the present appears to be.
