If government got out of both oil and alternative energy then alternative energy would need massive amounts of R&D and money before it caught up to oil.

Alternative energies are propped up by massive subsidies. Elon Musk has made billions directly from the government. Not to dismiss him at all because he's certainly a genius but everyone loves government cheese when they can get their foot in the door. I imagine many other alternative energy companies reap the benefits of government money.
