Seems like a lot of posters in here have never had a real job.
Days are considered earned or granted depending on your employer's policies or a negotiated employment contract. Your HR policies will clearly state whether they are earned days or a grant.
Additionally, many, if not most, companies prohibit use of vacation time once notice has been given.
