Nasa astronomers discover new solar system called Trappist-1 where life may have evolved on three out of seven of its planets
Henry Bodkin 22 FEBRUARY 2017 • 10:10 PM

Life may have evolved on at least three planets within a newly discovered solar system that is 39 light years from Earth, it was announced last night. Astronomers at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) have detected no less than seven roughly Earth-sized worlds orbiting a dwarf star in the system, it was announced today.

quote:

However, the new system contains an unprecedented number of Earth-sized, probably rocky planets, and is being hailed as an “accelerated leap forward” in the search for extraterrestrial life. Three of the new planets are said to be particularly promising because they could sustain oceans. Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of Nasa’s Science Mission Directorate, told a press conference in Washington: “This gives us a hint that finding a second Earth is not a matter of ‘if’, but ‘when’.”

From NY Times article:

quote:

Scientists could even discover compelling evidence of aliens.

How do they know there are planets there? They can't see them can they? Are they not too far away?

How do they figure this shite out with it being 39 light years away and no eyes on the source?

It's truly amazing to me what's out there. I wish I could be around for some of the things NASA knows but doesn't tell us.

So a mere 39 light years from earth...my math maybe wrong, but that would mean if we traveled to this solar system at 20,000mph, it would take us approximately 5,900 years to reach it. How the hell would we ever prove life on any of those planets?

Astronomers have made huge leaps in extra-solar planet hunting in the past 20 years. Even as recently as the 1990's, it was pretty much consensus that earth was special and that the vast majority of stars did not have planetary systems. Now they have found thousands of such planets and it is clear that stars without planets are rare (not the other way around).

Theoretically life can be detected with certain chemical signatures given off in the planet's atmosphere, but I doubt that will convince everyone. I am not sure biologists agree on what those signatures will be.

Any dumbass could shoot tons of steel into the air and land on an object millions of miles away. Those guys are dumbasses.

I'm guessing 97.3% of the right leaning poli's could do this.

I'd go 100% but we all know that 2.7% are still searching the jungles of Kenya for a birth certificate.

Tidal forces earth size bodies that close together would exert on each other would make things rough

Lots of volcanic and seismic activity, not to mention tides might cover continents

I like these threads on here because it shows what the general consensus on scientific issues are around here.

All planets MAY have had life evolve on them at some point.

It is also true that we have no proof of life outside of our solar system.

And

It is true that it is possible that NO LIFE has ever existed outside of our solar system.

All NASA has found is some planets that come closer to earth like than the hell holes they have previously discovered.

Sounds like fake news to me. We'll have to throw NASA a few more billion to determine the veracity of this news. Pony up taxpayers.
