They've been launching missles. Why now and why this one? It was inevitable with the past stance towards NK that they'd get to this point, so why not make this move sooner so they couldn't?

I'm not saying China can't wipe out NK but is it safe to poke an unstable person with Nukes. Back him too far into the corner and he might decide to go out in a blaze. Taking away the key source of income could cause the guy to stop pointing at things and start shooting at things.

That's not new. Kim killing one of his two blood brothers is new.

Thing is no one really knows what they are capable of. Multiple reports about their technology being way behind the rest of the world (its been reported on their visitor tours that they show CD's as being considered the pinnacle of technological advancement).

Very strong possibility that they don't have the capability to do anything.

Hasn't he thrown other blood relatives to the dogs, literally?

I don't know about dogs, but he's killed a few uncles in some creative ways. I think a couple were executed using AAA.

I didn't say "blood brother" as an aside.

I doubt Kim will risk giving the Chinese the middle finger like he does Japan, South Korea, and the US.

He already did through the recent missle tests and the assassination of his half-brother. It is a widely known "secret" that Kim Jong Nam was protected by China as insurance against a regime collapse. It was no accident that he was attacked in Malaysia.

Right now, all bets are off concerning the relationship between N. Korea and China.

China has long been reluctant to do anything that might threaten the stability of the North Korean regime — mainly because it fears that the reunification of the Korean Peninsula could bring South Korea, an American ally that hosts U.S. troops, right up to its border. .

The primary reason they don't want to destabilize the DPRK is they don't want 22 million refugees flowing across their border.

Yep and neither does South Korea no matter how much they pretend to want reunification.

I agree this is likely the biggest reason. But if we agreed to ship them coal to replace their imports from NK, that might give them incentive to put the squeeze on Fatboy.
China doesn't need the coal from North Korea. It was more of a diplomatic lifeline. They wouldn't need US coal to fill the gap.

At the end of the day, I think comfort is his primary motivator just like his daddy. I doubt either one of them had/have the nads to give up their cushy lifestyles for any cause.

Isn't this coming literally a day after meeting with Tillerson? If this is a result of that meeting has he single-handedly done more to put pressure on North Korea than Obama and Bush combined?
