So if he were in dire straits with 5k, how did he keep it afloat with just 27k?

He also failed business school with that idea
This is somewhat of a myth. I graduated from the same high school as Fred Smith, and he spoke a few times in chapel. He had the idea for what became FedEx in a term paper and the professor judged it harshly, he said he couldn't remember what grade he got but it was probably a C

Read the article. It says it was motivational and sparked another 11 million in investments

Random Fact. Fred's office is a fake office front of a made up company in a random office park. Or so I've heard.

ou think Memphis is a shithole now? Imagine Memphis without Fedex. It is the one company keeping it from becoming Jackson MS
Surprise, surprise. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
Memphis is home to 7 fortune 500 companies.
Baton Rouge has 1
New Orleans has 1

Everyone will say he has balls and thats why hes a success and all that. Complete bullshite. Guy is as lucky as they come. I wonder how many people have done the same shite to try to keep their business afloat and lost it all.

Memphis has 3x the Fortune 500 corporations as the state of Louisiana does total. I'm sure you haven't examined either Memphis or Jackson MS in some time if you're not trolling.

Smith impulsively flew to Las Vegas and played blackjack with the last of the company money.

Smith asked his disappointed investors for more money to keep the company afloat, but they refused. Bankruptcy was a distinct possibility. Then fate stepped in. While waiting for a flight home to Memphis from Chicago after being turned down for capital by General Dynamics, Smith impulsively hopped a flight to Las Vegas, where he won $27,000 playing blackjack. "The $27,000 wasn't decisive, but it was an omen that things would get better," Smith says. And indeed they did. Returning to his quest for funds, he raised another $11 million.

Was it an F or a D? I have forgotten the story now.

A family member of mine has worked at FedEx for almost 30 years. Some of the stories he has heard was that Fred was paying for fuel with credit cards, sold his Rolex, and was even asking pilots to put jet fuel purchases on their credit cards. He was also paying these pilots for a time in FedEx stock since he didn't have enough money to meet payroll. Another story is that some of the pilots were having to avoid repo men. Crazy stuff.
Those pilots were eventually handsomely rewarded.

Pretty true. His main office isn't at Fed Ex HQ. Its in a nondescript office building a quarter mile from his house. No company logos or signage displaying it as FedEx. Heavy hitters, politicians and diplomats go through there all the time I'm sure, so they keep it very low key
Fed Ex employees in the beginning were told by Fred not to cash their pay checks, and to trust him while he figured things out. Major gambles all around.

That makes more sense. My sister (no pics) seems to have overly embellished it. Pretty boss though.
