How did you make your descion? Wife wants to add, I want to move to Old Metairie.

I went to the bank, and the loan officer told me an addition would not be worth it.

What does this have to do with Putin and Russia?
Sorry, had to for old times sake.
I'd go new house if y'all have the budget for that. Sometimes additions can be a PITA.

Additions never work well. Asking for foundation problems, settling, roof leaks and all sorts of problems when you try to add on to a house.

If the addition involves a kitchen or bathroom, it's time to move.

Follow a structured decision making process (you and your wife)
1. Define the problem and write a problem statement.
2. List of fundamental objectives, means objectives, attribites by which to measure your objectives (cost, happiness, etc.)
3. Come up with a list of alternatives to compare.
4. Analyze the consequences. Can usually do pretty simply with a model in excel.
5. Perform a trade-off analysis
6. Make your decision!
7. Ignore the previous 6 steps of solid decision analysis and just listen to the irrational thoughts of your wife

Move to old Metairie...your wife will thank you later

Put a for sale sign in the yard and tell your wife she is a woman and does not have the smarts to handle a decision like this. Then tell her to get back in the kitchen.

That's my fear. Opening that can of worms on an older home is truly Pandora's box.

Additions are trashy. When I see a house with an addition i always think the occupant was too lazy to move so he hired a contractor to build on to the house. DIY additions? Dont do it

You will not get your value back on an addition, so if you go that way make sure y'all will be living there for many years to come

Dear lord who the hell is doing your work? If you have someone that actually knows what they are doing you shouldn't have any of these problems.
It depends on where the house is, how it is designed and how good the addition is drawn, built and fitted to the existing. I like old Metairie and plenty of those houses have been added too.

So you basically let a loan officer appraise your house? Lol

This. Once you add on it's over. The next owner will most likely not want what you did. I would just move. Chances are, someone is looking for what your home offers as is.
Don't add on

I've seen some really nice additions to old houses that are architecturally pleasant on the outside and modern and contemporary on the inside.

we need fewer details to help inform you of the best decision.

Depends on where you are now. We'll be building, but we're already in OM. To buy what we want in our neighborhood would cost a lot more than building. We also like everyone that lives next to us.
