re: Why are some thermostats powered by batteries?

I just got a nest and was pleasantly surprised to see it powers off the low voltage ac input. Also it's the easiest thermostat of all time to install. Even runs a diagnostic to make sure each connection does what it should.

All my older ones took AAA batteries.
