Thanks for the contributions!
I think you are underestimating Eddie Hazel's contribution... He was a pioneer of funk guitar...
"George Clinton’s P-Funk has boasted an array of funk-guitar greats through the years, but none has been better than Eddie Hazel. Hazel’s 10-minute solo on “Maggot Brain”--for which Clinton told him to “play like your mama just died”--remains one of funk’s seminal moments. Countless guitarists – including such rock-oriented players as J Mascis, Lenny Kravitz and Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready—have cited Hazel’s explosive impact."
I know that Frusciante and Flea both have cited Hazel as a big influence on them.
Sounds like you know a bit more history than I do, which is great and I appreciate the additions. But these are the guys whose music I grew up playing and listening to.

slash is consensus top 10 rock guitarists of all time. the dude belongs
I'll take your word. Just checked goat lists and didn't see one with Slash but talking about black musicians he is certainly hugely influential for the past couple of generations. and I'm a huge Parliament / Funkadelic fan...I've had every record ever made since they came out on vinyl...I personally just don't think of Eddie Hazel a top 10 influential guitarist....but it's cool...
edit... I saw Eddie Hazel play on campus in the P Mac, '77 IIRC.

i would have loved to see him play maggot brain live. that has been my go to song when live gets shitty since i was 10 years old. You and my dad probably have the same vinyl collection, i think '77 was his senior year of HS.

Robert Cray...man, I got hooked on him while in high school in the late '80's--still dig him 30 years later.

So he's white then, correct?

Not a household name but Tony MacAlpine is an amazing guitarist. Played in the progressive rock group Planet X with drummer virtuoso Virgil Donati and then Steve Vai asked him to play with him.

There is zero wrong with "One in a Million." This was a character's voice - the sentiment was unappreciated anger, not racism.

Robert Cray
Trivia: Cray is on bass for the fictional band, "Otis Day and the Knights" from Animal House.
No shite. He's old as frick. He was already in his 30s when he finally broke on the charts - but a fine guitar player, no doubt.

Good deal, you can't have a list about african american guitarists (or any guitarists) without the man that sold his sold to the devil and started it all.

If Grant Green isn't on it then your list is incomplete.
