At the end of this year, I will have the opportunity to transfer to Amsterdam or Geneva for at least a two year period. I am looking for experiences or any advise from/for these cities.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

For me it would be Amsterdam. Its more laid back than Geneva and much less expensive....prices are on par with Dallas. There are a lot of young people living there which results in a lot of cool things going on. And like someone mentioned, lots of good food from a variety of cultures and good drink.....the craft beer scene is exploding there. The only drawback to Amsterdam is the weather is pretty shitty from October to May....cold and rain, rain, rain.

Geneva is certainly peaceful, tidy, stable, scenic, but damn, it's expensive.
Amsterdam would be my choice, simply based on the cost of living. Unless you're being offered employer-subsidized housing or a bump in pay in Geneva.....

UPDATE: I am sorry for the absence, but the location is now set. I am headed to Geneva in August. Any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I lived for a few months living in Geneva about 6 years ago and it's a wonderful city and a great place to live, but it is ungodly expensive. Housing and food are both insane. It makes San Francisco or New York look cheap. The quality of life is really excellent though and it's beautiful. There are a number of good Anglophile pubs where there are a lot of American, Canadian, Aussie, and British expats specifically Mr. Pickwick and 7 Arts.

The tram is extremely easy to use and the best way to get around and the train system in Switzerland is truly amazing.
