In a half joke/half serious vein- do you remember the phenomenon called Beatlemania? Not destructive or political, but also swept the predominantly female population with hysteria, tears, mad adoration of the objects of their fixation. And then evaporated from sight. Then there was the anti war demonstration period - just as magnetic as Beatlemania, included both genders, was very pointedly political and sometimes destructive, deeply opposed to authority and if there was adoration, it was reserved for Che Guevara, Timothy Leary, Gene McCarthy, and select celebrity icons of like minds. Today's cultish Left behavior seems if not a direct descendent of the two previous manifestations, then at least a first cousin. It too shall (hopefully) pass.
