"states rights" right? officially it may be down as that but what righ do you think they were fighting for?

You know what pct of southerners owned slaves? 4. 4 fricking pct.

You know who made up almost all of the men who died for the Confederacy? The 96%. The poor fricks who did the same shite the slaves did every day for their family farms. You think these dudes were going to go die in their own shite for the rich dudes down the street to stay rich? frick no. They probably hated those guys.

It probably had more to do with waking up and looking out your window to see a bunch of dudes who arent from your home marching across your land. There is a reason the south called it the war of northern aggression. Thats what they viewed it as. Do a little research. Maybe you think you know what the generals and politicians were after...but you are way off when it comes to the intentions of the soldiers.

Countries go to war and act based on the interest of their leaders and the ruling class, not of the people. Yes let's say 96% of southerners did not have slaves. But what percent of that 96% were generals and other leaders of the south?

Then as now we act based on what the 1% or 4% then, tell us to act on. We are not led by the people, we are just told that we are. The people of the south didn't just see Yankees "walking across their farms" and decide to attack. The slave owning class that led the states, decided to secede to protect their rights. The right to own slaves a chief one. The right to not pay the crazy tariffs on
unprocessed goods another.

The myth that is was not about slavery is one that is only taught in smaller southern areas so that way they can not feel bad about their ancestors.

Also intentions of the soldiers has never ever ever mattered in any war. Most of the Wehrmacht were not bad guys, but to us they will always be fricking Nazis.
Soldiers are pawns to officers who are themselves pawns to flag officers who are themselves pawns to the commander in chief.

Since when do the intentions of soldiers matter? This is the most retarded shite I may have ever read on TD

Not sure if serious, as you just summed up the history of the world only to deny it.

Just because they didn't own slaves doesn't mean that they weren't fighting to protect slavery. They could have and probably were fighting to protect slavery and what they saw as supremacy over slaves. They may have been poor, but at least they weren't slaves and they may have been worth fighting for.

The poor routinely are tricked into supporting the interests of the wealthy by using ideas like patriotism and honor. These ideas were in abundance in the South. In fact there were pockets in the South who refused to support the war because they thought that it was a "rich man's cause." This isn't some radical idea. Your jingoism prevents you from seeing this though.

And that same small group controlled enough of the economic and political power to cause the confederate states to secede and start the civil war.

The bottom 96% will do any god-damned thing the top 4% tell them to. Right now, the top 4%, hell, even the top 1%, are telling the bottom 99% to get their asses out of bed, get to work and put in 50, 60 or more hours every week to make barely enough to live on, and the 99% are doing just that. Do the 99% hate them? A good many of them sure as hell do. Does that make one lick of difference when it comes to what the 1% can "make" the 99% do? Nope. And even dying in wars is no different. The thousands of American soldiers who have died in Iraq protecting oil interests aren't the sons and daughters of billionaires. You think they wanted to die so Exxon and other corporations could keep raking in billions? Hell no. And it didn't matter one bit.

Federal troops weren't marching across the south (or at least not in significant numbers) until after secession and after Fort Sumter.

What the hell do the intentions of the soldiers matter? They didn't matter in Vietnam, they don't matter in Iraq and Afghanistan and they won't matter in whatever next bullshite war we get into for reasons that have little or nothing to do with protecting our freedom. Soldiers didn't start the civil war. Greedy rich people and their political puppets did for one simple reason, the same reason they started almost all wars that have ever been fought: to protect their economic interests. Their economic interests depended on slavery, so slavery had to be protected at any cost, even civil war. If you think they would have gone to that extent to protect states' rights on issues like bank regulation (McCulloch vs. Maryland), steamboat traffic (Gibbons vs. Ogden), etc., then you are deluding yourself. It was slavery, and the desperate need of wealthy slaveowners in the south to keep it, that was pretty much the sole cause of the civil war.
