also beats out Game 7 of the world series

quote:

That was proven true again on Sunday evening, as not only was the Cowboys’ last-second divisional round loss to the Green Bay Packers the highest-rated game of the four NFL playoff games this weekend, it was the highest-rated divisional round game on any network in 20 years.

Per Fox Sports the Green Bay Packers down-to-the-wire win over the Dallas Cowboys averaged a 28.2/48 overnight rating/share. That just means on average 28.2% of the households in the 56 metered markets were tuned-in to the game and on average 48% of the people watching TV in those markets at the time were watching the game.

Even more impressive: Cowboys-Packers drew more eyes than Game 7 of the World Series in November, when the Chicago Cubs broke their 108-year championship streak. That game, with the Cubs beating the Cleveland Indians, drew a 25.2 rating.

UPDATE: The final numbers are out and they are truly amazing. First, the Packers-Cowboys game drew the best viewership for a television program since Super Bowl 50 last February. From Fox’s Mike Mulvihill, the averaged a huge viewership peaking over 60 million: Follow Michael Mulvihill @mulvihill79 Packers-Cowboys averaged 48.5 million viewers and peaked at 62.4 million.

Buuuut football is dying

Seriously, it isn't hard to figure out. Two popular teams played a damn good game and people watched.

The NFL's issue this year was about quality, last weekend showed there were just a lot of bad football teams this season.

Texas always brings it.

They are one of the true national draws in both pro and college.

This GB/Cowboys game was the Pro version of Notre Dame at Texas - which was just a regular season game.

The top 10 most watched games in CFB history involve:

Miami - 3 times
Texas - twice
USC - twice
Ohio State - twice
Notre Dame - twice

And earlier this year...

Cowboys win vs. Washington was most-watched NFL regular season game ever on FOX.

I think next year will be a better test for ratings. Trump changed all ratings.

Easily the best game I've seen all year, and other than the one big PA call, the refs avoided getting overly ticky-tacky.

It was a well-officiated, well-played, and well-coached game that went down to the wire. Those were at a premium this year and in the post season as well.
