For the second time in the span of just one week, the automaker has made it clear: It's building a plant in Mexico, regardless of what Donald Trump thinks.

In an interview with German news magazine Bild published this weekend, Trump said that BMW should reconsider plans to build a $1 billion plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico. The automaker plans to begin building the BMW 3 Series sedan there in 2019.

"I would tell them, don't waste their time and money -- unless they want to sell to other countries," he said. "But I would tell BMW if they think they're gonna build a plant in Mexico and sell cars into the US without a 35% tax, it's not gonna happen."

So, Trump is proposing we pay more for our BMWs if they build in Mexico (cuz you know who ends up paying that tax, right?).

Furthermore, this is not even an American company.
And what better way to keep Mexicans in Mexico than them having jobs??

I get why trump is doing what he is doing.

But

BMW isn't an American company. They aren't moving from the US to mexico. I just don't see what angle he has here.

It's all a kabuki dance. Trump sings his song, and his supporters lap it up.

Trump knows good and well a few things...

1) Congress has the authority on tariffs, not the President.

2) The BMW plant (and all car plants in Mexico) utilizes a ton of suppliers from the United States. Something like this hurts them badly - a far worse impact than having 5,000 or whatever jobs it would create if they, say, expanded their Spartanburg plant.

So where are all the 3 series being built right now? I'm sure BMW was going to lower the price for the cars they already sell in America once they had access to cheap Mexican labor, right? Surely they weren't going to just pocket the increased profit were they?

Tax will be on imports on Mexico. Trump is warning BMW that they will be impacted by the tax if they move forward with building cars in Mexico and selling them in the US.

Fewer people will buy those cars and it will cause either the price to drop, the series to be discontinued, or BMW will be forced to relocate the manufacturing of the car.

Don't miss my BMW. Won't be getting another one.

Still refuse to drive American though.

Trump needs to put some pressure on the Range Rover design team so I can buy something newer than an L322. Make Rovers Square Again

I think the answer is to guarantee BMW and other manufacturers that they can get American labor as cheap as Mexico (and China, and India, and Philipines, etc). The US autoworkers unions can be busted with good cheap Mexican labor. Maybe even put some of those refugees to work or use prison labor.

If they take a profit loss from their expense, then that would be on BMW. Let's play.

BMWs have kinda cheap looking interiors.
Audi and Infinity are so much nicer.
