Veterans get license free in Louisiana. Get a lifetime. It's free. No lie
The 5 year permit is probably a better deal. It's still free for veterans (half price for active .mil -- but the lifetime permit does not exempt you from the NICS background check when buying firearms.

eta: People who get the lifetime permit still have to take a CCW class every five years.

Was it always free for vets? I thought I remember my grandpaw paying for it back in 2013.

Probably the class he payed for. The license might've been free. Never mind.
Also, what needs to be done to renew my license? I'm due 02/18 and want to get it done a while before so I don't get held up in the system and it expires. Any classroom time? Or just range?

Can you explain this? I got my lifetime a year ago, and there's no place on my license to put a sticker or something updating my license when I take a class every 5 years.

ETA: I'm a vet and didn't have to take the initial class bc of small arms training on my dd214. Also, at the time, it was half price for me.

Negative. I'm scared the next round of legislation could shitcan the deal. I'll take the lifetime option and just wait on NICS checks. I paid for my 5 years this time and I have to wait until it becomes renewable so I can get my free lifetime. I couldn't do it early.
