I studied French 4 yrs in HS and 4 yrs at LSU and never learned it very well.
I attended the DLI and in 51 weeks I passed board exams reading 3, writing 3 and speaking 2+ in Russian the end. Which secured me a job at the NSA directly following.
Isolation and submersion in the language is the only proven method to master board level mastery of foreign languages. Except the lower languages like French, Spanish and Hatian Creole.
I mastered "Serbo-Turbo" (as we called it) in a 6 weeks course one I mastered Russian. I've sense been able to pick up Polish and Ukraian on my own based on the previous languages mastered.
