I know reading is hard for some of you lefties.

People over age 16 who are no longer working or even looking for work, for whatever reason (retirement, school, personal preference, or gave up), are counted as not participating in the labor force

I would agree it can be deceiving to a degree like all things, no more than the unemployment rate though IMO, as it depends on people registering.

I'd argue labor force participation is the least deceiving personally

You aren't crazy. A lot of posters like to spread a lot of misinformation.

We tell the same people over and over again that it includes everyone over 16, but they just cup their ears and hum (figuratively).

I interpreted it as (working + looking for work)/population.

quote:

The labor force participation rate. This measure is the number of people in the labor force as a percentage of the civilian noninstitutional population 16 years old and over. In other words, it is the percentage of the population that is either working or actively seeking work.

Actually I was incorrect. That 95 million # is basically all humans 16 and over capable of work. I was mistaken.

However, the stagnation of our economy is not due to retirees. I've posted the statistics tirelessly in the past showing older people working longer due to uncertainty in the economy, record # of food stamps, declining home ownership, lowering of work week hours, part-time vs. full time jobs and decreasing to stagnant median income.

I'm not posting the links to that today because I'm off. Mmcgrath, you know of the stats I've posted. We've had this argument many times.

I think it's partially due to it, but not as much as it should be.

No he's correct. The labor force part. Rate compared to population as a whole, is a factor with retirees. The U6 I think? that doesn't count retirees, still shows stagnation and zero net job growth pre-recession accounting for population growth as well. That one is ignored by the left for obvious reasons.
