MSY can handle any size jet.

The main issue currently is that you can't have simultaneous takeoffs and/or landings.

I've heard from several pilots that MSY struggles with wide-body aircraft. They can handle one or two, but to handle larger numbers would be an issue.

As far as simultaneous takeoffs and landings, is that an issue of just two runways, or is it the fact that the two are perpendicular? In either event, wouldn't a third runway that was truly seperate help out here?

Ah...I thought you were talking about runway length, not gate access. Yes, currently they can only handle a few wide-bodies from my understanding. The new terminal will aid in that.

Since they are perpendicular and intersect, you cannnot have simultaneous activity. If they built a new runway, it would likely be parallel to 11/29 which is the longer one that runs east-west. Some cargo buildings would likely need to be relocated.

I'd put the 3rd runway as a low-prioritiy, though.
