Those guys are all headed straight into the military in the next few years, I'm sure they can take some friendly ribbing about the quality of play in a football game.

Actually he was giving high praise to the players. They are doing this with a higher level of commitment than even the "best football."
THAT was the point he was making.
i.e. = "These players are playing their hearts out for the love of the game and the competitive spirit - they are not like an Alabama team full of super-starts just out to win another trophy.'

I have a feeling that with some posters here, Trump could insult their mothers and it would be OK. They are as bad as the furthest Left wing nutcase taking offense at Hiliary jokes.
The next President of the U.S. needs to think about what he says and how it sounds. His only comment should have been Great Game!!
