Which is why the lifestyle that you can afford matters more than a dollar amount in regards to class, IMO.

which is always the trouble with this topic
some people define it by lifestyle, while others define it by scale
I prefer scale because its the easiest and most consistent definition
too many variables as to why someone's lifestyle could be better or worse with the same salary

I mean I get what you're saying, but you can't really judge those outside factors when measuring this kind of stuff.
If you can't have kids because they'll cramp your middle class lifestyle, then you're not middle class. Obviously there is a limit on that though.
