A well set up rifle with a competent shooter hunting at long ranges (400+) can be more ethical than what I've seen people do at 75.

Herein lies the problem. I agree 100% with what you said. The problem, though, is that there are farrrrrr too many people who think a 2" group at 100 yards is "tight" , and that all they have to do is look up the balistics from whatever manufacturer they bought their factory ammo from, and adjust upward according to distance. Or that hitting a milk jug at 300 yards means they should be shooting deer at those distances. I would venture to say that the overwhelming majority of hunters who think they can shoot 400 yards have never done so, and are incapable of hitting a 1' square at that distance....present company and OB enthusiasts excluded, of course.
