Quintana is the better pitcher

Those two deals don't make sense though

You go from

quote:

Martes will headline the package, probably with older Tucker, Reed, and one of the big names in A-ball.

For Quintana

To

quote:

springer, Fiers, Martes, Reed, and older Tucker... You get Quintana and Robertson

You change out an A ball prospect that's likely in the 6-10 range for the Astros for George Springer and all you get is David Robertson?

Probably not, but I don't think the second one makes the team better. If you aren't able to sign another FA you have a starting OF of Aoki/Hernandez/Reddick.

You're basically boxing yourself into overpaying for Encarnacion or Fowler

Robertson isn't Chapman/Jansen or Wade Davis.

Ryno dropping knowledge. This is probably the best guess anyone has thrown out so far.

I'm assuming that's little Tucker

Yep. Guys like PTuck, Reed, Moran, etc lost a lot of value over the last year.

That alone won't get you Quintana -- my post wasn't very clear. Either McHugh or Fiers will go to Chicago with the list above. Quintana won't be a "we want bregman" deal... but it won't be cheap.

Also, the second scenario, I left off the mandatory young stud (young tucker or Daz, etc).

And I disagree on not needing bullpen help. The last two seasons, Harris and Gregerson have been shaky as hell towards the end of the season. Throw Robertson into the mix -- it gives you a KCRoyals type bullpen to make a run through the playoffs.

Or, we could just count on Tony Sipp and Chapman. That might work.

I think Reed is still fairly valuable. Not a top 30 prospect like he once was but he could still be a nice complimentary piece in a trade

It's a shame because he was a headliner a year ago.

There's a reason they are called prospects though.

I got a feeling that Reed is a guy that is going to figure it out the week after we trade him.

You are probably going to have to add one of them to get Quintana by himself. Preston Tucker has very little value at this point. I still don't see how adding in Springer to get Robertson seems like a good deal

I really don't think so. Robertson is good but is not a dominant guy like the Royals had in Davis or the Indians had in Miller or Cubs with Chapman. You have to consider the downgrade you are giving your lineup when you consider the upgrade in the bullpen too.

Something we haven't mentioned much yet, the Rule 5 draft is tomorrow. I guess the most likely guy we could lose would be Mike Hauschild, since he's a command first guy who could potentially eat innings for a bad team.

Maybe we should go after a high upside bullpen arm and see if they can stick. We probably won't, with Giles, Gregerson, Harris, Feliz, Devo, Sipp and Hoyt probably already penciled into the pen, but there's a couple lefty relievers that teams have left unprotected.

this all makes sense. I really think my idea of grabbing quinata and robertson is an emotional reaction from me not thinking my liver can withstand the vast amounts of bourbon it's going to take for me to live through another season of Tony Sipp.

Our bullpen is far from solid. Still have no closer. I would go after EE at this point and build a softball team of hitters.

See if you can get a deal for archer or Q or Duffy for prospects. If not...hold off until July and make a deal.

EE costs nothing but money.

I would love to sign Boone Logan who was discussed in here last year. He's still available. I think adding Quintana plus the lineup upgrades is a huge improvement, and they can look at other bullpen upgrades closer to the deadline to make the team better for October

Agree that the bullpen needs one more arm.

At this point, if you go out and get a semi young TOR arm and add a piece to the bullpen, we won't need to be doing much large scale trading over the next 2-3 years.

That's plenty of time to reload the prospect stockpile

It is a huge improvement. But here's how I am looking at it -- in reference to that other thread, the difference between the Astros and the Red Sox for next season -- on paper:

The Red Sox players merely need to have career average seasons from them to be a dominant team.

The Astros are going to have to have some players have Career-Peak seasons for them to compete with the career-average playing Red Sox.

Unfortunately, it's just as likely that the Red Sox will have several players with career-peak seasons next year and the Astros will have some Career-low seasons.

My liver just kicked me in my ribs.

And apprently his market has cratered. As I was wondering yesterday if his years on the deal would come in lower than first reported. Per Jeff Passan on the twitter
quote:

Edwin Encarnacion is in wait-and-see mode because of how his market cratered. At this point, no team even willing to go three years, $60M.
quote:

One GM last night on Encarnacion: "Teams shouldn't overplay their hands with him, either. He's too good for the price to go much lower."
